Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono conveyed an apology to members of the House of Representatives. The latter protested because rubber produced by farmers in Riau Province was not purchased in the Covid-19 impact mitigation refocussing program at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

In his presentation at a joint meeting of the House of Representatives Commission V on Monday (05/11/2020), Minister Basuki explained that the purchase of 12,500 tons of farmers’ natural rubber production as a rubber asphalt mixture was carried out in nine major natural rubber producing provinces. The list of provinces consists of North Sumatera, West Sumatera, Jambi, South Sumatera, Lampung, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central and East Kalimantan.

DPR Commission V member from the Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (Prosperous Justice Party) Syahrul Aidi Maazat said that in a previous meeting he had revealed that infrastructure development used raw materials in the community including natural rubber. Syahrul regretted the Ministry of PUPR did not include Riau as an area of rubber purchasing. Riau is the fourth largest rubber producer in Indonesia, while West Sumatera whose production is far below Riau is included in the rubber purchase plan.

In response to that, Minister Basuki expressed his apology and promised to immediately add Riau to the list of rubber purchases so that the number of provinces increased to 10, including Riau. The submission of an apology from Minister Basuki was also immediately responded and accepted by the house of representatives members. ***, 11/05/2020
