The government optimizes national natural rubber towards a sustainable management and development system globally through the Sustainable Natural Rubber Platform of Indonesia (SNARPI).
Deputy for the Coordination of Food and Agribusiness at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Jakarta Tuesday said her expectation that SNARPI can become the primary reference for issues related to national natural rubber sustainability and become the main gate to open for cooperation with international organizations related to natural rubber sustainability at the global level.
SNARPI, which was formally announced as an effort for a sustainability platform for natural rubber at the Grand Launching of SNARPI on March 30, 2022, specifically aims to raise the dignity and welfare of the farming community and, at the same time, respond to the sustainability demands of the world rubber market.
The platform conception is prepared, developed, and improved with the active involvement of multi-stakeholders in the national natural rubber scale. The development of this platform itself was initiated by three institutions, namely GAPKINDO, Rainforest Alliance, and SNV Indonesia.
Through several series of Focus Group Discussions, which were followed up with several intensive working group level discussions, the General Guidelines for SNARPI were born as an early document to move in a more advanced direction. The SNARPI General Guidelines contain the principles and criteria for what has been discussed as a form of sustainable natural rubber in Indonesia. Those principles and criteria can be the basis for preparing sectoral guidelines.
These principles cover various issues, namely farmer welfare, good agricultural and processing practices, environment, natural resource management, biodiversity and ecosystems, human rights and indigenous peoples, health and safety of employees and consumers, collaboration, and supply chain partnerships that are effective—fair and responsible, as well as systems and procedures for the realization of platform principles. In addition, SNARPI will be improved into a formal institution that is expected to oversee the implementation of the principles in the Main Guidelines. All stakeholders need to participate actively and fully support SNARPI agenda for the sustainable national rubber industry. ***
